The Race
Evan raced down the mountain as quickly as he could. He was determined to beat Steve to the bottom of the hill. As Evan swerved in and out of the skiers, he clenched his teeth. There was no time for a wreck today. Besides, his back still hurt from last week’s wreck. The wind was now starting to pick up.
A skier yelled at Evan because he cut him off. Evan wondered if it was worth the risk. He felt like his time was quicker than last time—but was it enough to beat Steve?
Evan crossed over to where the ski runs merged back together. He glanced over his shoulder to see if Steve was behind him. No such luck.
“Where is he?” wondered Evan.
There was one more jump in the run that Evan had to make before he was home free. As he approached the jump, he saw a group of people standing around with other people sitting on the ground. Evan didn’t have time to get a good look. He had his eyes set on the finish line. There was still no sign of Steve. He wasn’t at the finish line waiting. That was unusual.
After stopping at the finish to catch his breath, Evan finally allowed himself to believe he had won the race! Only then did he look up at the crowd to see his friend Steve walking down the hill on crutches.
